Description

Polartec Grid zip top Midlayer.

I designed the Polartec Grid Zip Mid-layer to have reduced seems and low bulk allowing the fabric to wick and dry quicker. using one of the best fleece fabrics in the world. This ensures the Polartec Power Grid zip top midlayer has reduced effects to the environment, in that it lasts longer.

The Dannah Polartec Grid Zip Mid-layer performs as a cold-weather layering piece. Or a standalone on drier days. The fleece, POLARTEC® Power Grid™ Technology, provides warmth and stretch.  The design maintains comfort with fast moisture movement, and layers easily. The Shaped neck reduces bulk and allows moisture to wick quicker. The easy slide cuff with thumb loop makes the top easy to regulate temperature control by rolling the sleeve or use of thumb loops. Articulated patterning improves mobility, and reduced seams maximises the fabric technology to the max. the long hem at the back rides comfortably under a harness and has tailored fit to help seal unwanted drafts.

Technical Features

This  piece of clothing for any Athletic mountain user as it needs to function in the extremes. I believe this garment must work hard as a piece in the layering system. The way it is constructed is very important. The first thing is the Polartec Grid zip top midlayer does is to loft or provide warm still air to prevent air movement. The collar design is shaped to cling to your neck thus to stop warm air escaping. The close body design also maximises the warmth, while being while being as light as possible.

While keeping you warm the garment also allows venting and cooling, the centre front zipper has a good depth to allow venting to the chest and neck. The sleeve design is done in a way which you the wearer can role the sleeve up exposing the forearm, which is one of the most efficient ways to cool down. Another feature are thumb loops to help hold warmth in and a pocket to hold important items or something you wish to protect within your layered system of clothing.

Not the Ordinary.

Conventional mid layer pieces apply band of fabric around the neck opening to create a collar. Our collar grows on from the body and forms closer to the neck preventing gaps and making the most efficient use of the Polartec Grid fabric.

When I set out to design the Polartec Grid zip top midlayer, I was very aware that the fashion is to make a hooded fleece mid layer. Although this a great function and some prefer, a hood can be an issue when trying to organise your layering on a pitch or in Bad weather. A hood can be lumpy between your Shell and create unnecessary cold spots at the back of the neck. I know of a few climbers who cut out the hood to make the garment work with a collar, the other great thing about this piece is it is not bulky, around the sleeve especially at the elbow the fabric is still thin to maximise movement in the arms  thus maintain blood flow to the fingers and hands. I have heard stories of bulky garments cutting of circulation and hands getting cold.

  1. Colin (verified owner)

Great warmth to weight. Nicely made and finished. The lack of seams around the neck line makes it very comfortable under jackets. Fit is ‘athletic’ with room for one or two base layers. Not tight, but snug. But if you’re between sizes, I’d suggest going up, not down. Very impressed.

Following from a “Polartec” is the best all-round technical fleece recommendation, I took the plunge and bought a couple of these & have been nothing but impressed. Used for mtb-ing/walking, I’m not finding I need the multiple michelin man thick layers, I’d usually use just to stay warm. Between this and thin Rab under layer and my normal waterproof, I’ve been really warm in stupidly cold conditions. The top wicks the moisture away really well, and don’t have the movement restrictions I normally experience due with well insulated (thick) clothing. I’d found a review online suggesting they might be a little short in the body, a concern for cycling as tops usually ride up leaving your lower back exposed, but I’m not found this to be the case, though it maybe slight shorter than a specific cycling tops. As mentioned by Colin review, it s athletic fit but not tight. Thoroughly recommended!
